William Godfrey Obituary

William I. Godfrey, age 90, of Marengo, passed away Monday, January 17, 2022 at Aperion Care in Elgin, Illinois.

He was born on July 3, 1931in Grinnell, Iowa to William E. and Genevieve (Vahrenwald) Godfrey. He married Marilyn Gunderman on January 29, 1955.

He was a United States Marine serving during the Korean War in the First Marine Division. He received a degree in Engineering and worked for the State of Illinois Highway Department. Bill was a model train hobbyist and an avid train spotter. He also enjoyed reading about military history. He and mom enjoyed traveling around the United States in search of antiques for mom and trains for dad’s railroad photo collection.

He is survived by three children, two sons, Terrence (Kimberly Biehl) and Lawrence (Peg) Godfrey; a daughter Elizabeth (Rodger) Larson; two grandchildren William (Jane O’Brien) and Amanda (Casey) Truelove; five great grandchildren Miriam, Catherine, and John Henry, Lucy Truelove and Alder Godfrey.

He was preceded in death by his wife and a brother Alan Godfrey.

In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or Salvation Army.

A memorial service is being planned for March 19, 2022 starting at 10:00am until prayer service at 12:00pm at the Schneider Leucht Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home 1211 N. Seminary Ave. Woodstock, Illinois.
