Vernon L. Sarbaugh, 87, of Woodstock, IL, passed away Thursday, July 18, 2019 at JourneyCare Hospice of Barrington, IL.
He was born March 18,1932, in DeKalb, IL to Harry and Mamie (Hegberg) Sarbaugh.
He grew up in Union/Marengo, IL where he spent his childhood milking cows on local dairy farms, starting his life long love of farming. In 1952 he was inducted into the United States Army, where he served two years in the Korean Conflict, as a heavy duty equipment mechanic. Upon his return home from military service, he married the love of his life, Darlene Zimmerman on November 13, 1954.
For 20 years he was a partner of Zimmerman and Sarbaugh Excavating. In 1975 he became sole proprietor and changed the name to V. Sarbaugh Excavating, until his retirement in 2007. Vernon loved life, his wife, his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He also loved a hard days work, RV-ing, and dancing.
He is survived by his children; Jane Sarbaugh, Ralph Sarbaugh, Sherri (Basil) Bakakos, Penny (Edward) Flynn, and Peggy Sarbaugh; six grandchildren, Jenny (Jerad) Herrmann, Nick (Jennifer) Bakakos, Jackie Shipley, Lucas Shipley, J.J (Alex) Kliman and Carly (Derek) Swoboda; five great grandchildren, Hailie, Nolan, Madison, Wyatt and Kory; sisters, Gertrude Aubrey and Patsy (Robert) Foster; sister-in-law Betty Sarbaugh; his wife's sister Shirley (Charles) Berlin; brother-in-law Kenneth (Cindy) Zimmerman, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Darlene, his parents Harry and Mamie, his brothers Marvin (June), Bob (Gloria), and Ole; his sisters, Betty (Clarence) Karsten, Harriet (Ed) Zenk, Marilyn (Bud) Slavin and brother-in-law Don Aubrey.
Visitation will be from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Thursday, July 25, 2019 at Schneider Leucht Merwin and Cooney Funeral Home, 1211 N. Seminary Ave., Woodstock. The visitation will continue on Friday, July 26, 2019 at Grace Lutheran Church in Woodstock from 9:30 am until the 10:00 am Funeral Service. Interment will follow in the McHenry County Memorial Park Cemetery.
