Sidney Norton Obituary

Sidney Leon Norton, 77, of Wonder Lake, was received into the arms of Jesus on May 3, 2023.  He was born July 24th, 1945 to Beatrice and Reuben Norton.

Sid, a devoted and loving husband, father, and grandfather is survived by his son Scott; daughter Andrea (Joel) and 4 grandchildren Sarah, Rachel, David and John. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Patt Norton.

Sid grew up number 4 of 6 kids in Solon Mills, IL and attended a one room classroom with his older brother and sisters before eventually graduating from high school in Woodstock, IL. He met Patt in school and would often stop by where she waitressed just to see her smile. Sid was drafted to Vietnam at the age of 19. He and Patt married just before he left for war. He was allowed to come home for the birth of their first child, Andrea and then immediately sent back to Vietnam.  When he came home, thankfully, they had their second child, Scott.

Sid’s heart was always that of a farmer, but he spent most of his days as a mechanic, a stock car driver and an excavator.  He loved running big equipment and he was good at it. He also had a need for speed and he was a great stock car driver too!  Being a mechanic paid the bills, but his passion was growing radishes and tomato plants in his garden, much like his mother before him.

One of Sid’s greatest achievements was being a father and grandfather to his own children and the ones God brought into his life. His other greatest achievement was his marriage of 50 years to Patt and the way he faithfully cared for her during her 9 year loosing battle with Alzheimer’s. She had one wish to remain at home and he moved heaven and earth to make it happen.

Sid will be missed for his endless catch phrases, his generous spirit and explosive laughter. He was a funny guy! Going to church for Sid was watching the birds at his extensive feeders out back and he regularly waged epic battles with squirrels. He loved fishing and hunting with his dogs but mainly he loved his friends and family and consistently went the extra mile for them no matter the cost to himself.

To honor and remember Sid, there will be a visitation on Tuesday May 9th from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm and Wednesday May 10th from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm with a Funeral Service at noon at the Schneider Leucht Merwin Cooney Funeral Home. Interment will follow in the McHenry County Memorial Park Cemetery in Woodstock with Military Honors.  A luncheon will follow the Interment Services.
