Mary Catherine “Mary Kay” Humpa, age 84, of Woodstock, IL passed away on August 23, 2022 at Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital.
She was born on December 6, 1937 in Chicago to Bill and Anna (Cannon) Peterson. She was the youngest of four daughters. Mary Kay graduated from Immaculata High School in 1956 and earned a BA in education from DePaul University in 1960. She married Mel Humpa (whom she met at DePaul) on July 8, 1961 at St. Juliana Church in Chicago. She was a long-term resident of Schaumburg (St. Marcelline parish) and Woodstock (St. Mary parish).
Mary Kay was a beloved elementary school teacher, beginning her career in Wheeling. She took a break from teaching to be a stay-at-home mom until her own children were of school age, at which point she began working in Schaumburg District 54. She retired in 1994.
During their 61-year marriage, Mary Kay and Mel were avid travelers, visiting many parts of the US and Western Europe. They also enjoyed dining out and gathering together with family members from near and far to celebrate holidays, birthdays, graduations, and other milestones.
Mary Kay is survived by her husband Mel; her sons Greg (Kevin Groves), Paul (Sarah Thacker), and Phil (Carrie Parker); her grandchildren Kathleen (Jack) Gosselin, Kristina Humpa, Eric Humpa, and Charlie Parker; her great-grandson Cooper Gosselin; her sisters Lenore (Dick) Koehn and Marilyn (Ron) Singer; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Eileen (Jack) Cunningham.
Visitation will be Saturday, October 8, 2022 from 9:00 to 11:00am at St. Mary Catholic Church, 312 Lincoln Ave., Woodstock, IL. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow immediately afterward.
