Marie Grace "Toots" Smith

Marie Grace “Toots” Smith, 99, of Woodstock passed away peacefully in her sleep on July 31, 2021 in Southern California, where she resided with her daughter for the last six years.

Born May 30, 1922 in Chicago, she was the daughter of James and Mary (Barone) Scaran and the first of three sisters. She was the beloved wife of Charles G. “Sam” Smith with whom she celebrated 68 years of marriage prior to his passing on April 19, 2015.

Marie was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Woodstock, where she belonged to the Mariola Club and served as a Eucharistic minister. She was a physical therapy assistant for many years at Easter Seals (now Adult & Child Therapy Services) in Woodstock.

Her family and grandchildren were her joy. She enjoyed reading and traveling to Europe. A gregarious soul, she loved socializing with family and friends.

Marie was always the hostess and wanted to make others feel comfortable.

Whether it was preparing an Italian table with the “Mama Mias” to honor St. Joseph, hosting her bridge club or attending a TOPS Club weight control meeting, she displayed her gift of graciousness.

Survivors include her daughter Cynthia “Cindi” (Norm) Davern of California; grandsons Michael (Jaime) Davern, Justin Davern, Andrew (Alicia) Davern and Aidan Smith; three great-granddaughters, Sawyer, Savannah and Abigail Davern; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her son Jamie Smith of Lake Geneva and her sisters Matilda Marrash and Lucille Paul.

A Memorial Gathering will be on Tuesday, August 31, 2021 at St. Mary Catholic Church, 312 Lincoln Avenue, Woodstock from 9:30 am until the 10:30 am Memorial Mass. Private burial will follow at Linn-Hebron Cemetery.
