Joseph Clayton Myers, 83, of Woodstock, IL, formerly Arlington Heights, IL, passed away on Thursday, February 25, 2021 surrounded by his loving family.
Born on July 25, 1937 in Farmington, WV to Olga and Keith Myers, Joe was one of four children. He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Henrietta “Penny” Myers (née Freeman); his loving children, Lenore (Donald Williams) Zanello, Joyce (Phillip) Dahlin, Patricia (Steven Harding) Curtis , and Desiree (Daniel) Tiberi, twelve grandchildren, five great grandchildren, a sister, Barbara Cheuvront, and brother, David Myers. Preceding him in death were his parents, a son, Thomas Barris, and a brother, George Myers.
Proud son of a coal miner, Joe spent his childhood in Farmington and is a 1955 graduate of Farmington High School. He served four years in the United States Navy. After being honorably discharged from service, Joe moved to Ozona, TX, then to Chicago, IL where he met Penny, also from West Virginia. They married in 1961 and raised their family together in Arlington Heights. He worked as a truck driver for Northshore Distributors for 30 years.
Joe’s greatest treasure was his family. He was a loving father to his children and a highly devoted grandfather. Holding strong pride in his roots, Joe was a lifelong West Virginia University fan, and spent many autumn Saturdays cheering on his cherished Mountaineers.
Joe was a true, hard worker, but he enjoyed his retirement years immensely and never looked back. He reaped the rewards of his life of providing for his family, which was so important to him. Joe spent many of his retirement years traveling with Penny, going to bluegrass music festivals, gardening, and playing weekly rounds of golf. Most of all, he enjoyed the simple things in life: sharing stories and jokes, college football and basketball, reading, and spending quality time with loved ones. A good friend to all, the door to Joe’s home was always open. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
An Interment Service will be held for close family, and friends at 11:00 am on Tuesday, March 2, 2021 at 11:00 am at Memory Gardens Cemetery, 2501 E. Euclid Avenue, Arlington Heights, IL 60004. A celebration of Joe’s life will be held at a later date.
