David A. Berna, age 84, died peacefully at home on January 19, 2023, in the loving care of his wife of 58 years, in Janesville, Wisconsin.
Dave will be fondly remembered by family and friends as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, a talented craftsman, a lover of the outdoors, and a loyal friend.
Dave was born on August 3, 1938 to Edith Helen Loeffel Berna and Aloysius Berna in Woodstock, Illinois. He spent his entire childhood growing up in Woodstock with his three sisters, and graduated from Woodstock High School in 1957. In 1958 he joined the US Army and was stationed in Germany. Shortly after returning home from his military service he met his wife Judy, and they were married on September 12, 1964. Dave worked for Commonwealth Edison in substation construction in the Chicagoland area. He had two children, Jennifer and David, and as a father he loved to do numerous outdoor activities with them. Dave retired from ComEd after almost thirty years, and in his retirement he enjoyed hobbies of gardening, leatherwork, hand weaving baskets, and fishing—he always looked forward to his annual fishing trip to Canada with his friends.
Dave was preceded in death by parents Edith and Aloysius Berna; parents-in-law Gertrude Kirtz and Norman Lange; brother William Berna; and brother-in-law Robert Shook. He is survived by his wife, Judith Berna of Janesville, Wisconsin; two children Jennifer (Sam) Berna of Marseilles, Illinois, and David (Megan) Berna of Belleville, Wisconsin; grandchildren, Kaylee, Matthew, Evan, and Morgan; sisters Joyce Shook, Joanne (Al) Fischer, and Patricia Lou (James) Haning; as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many dear friends.
