Albert R. Mansfield Jr., 98, of Tomah, WI (formerly of Woodstock, IL) passed away July 23, 2022 at home with his loving family by his side.
Born in Woodstock on June 22, 1924, the son of Albert R. Mansfield Sr. and Carrie (Westphall) Mansfield. He married Eugenia Pearl Malmstrom in Woodstock on May 17, 1947.
Al enlisted the US Marine Corps in September 1942 until October 1945. He served as a Scout/Sniper in the Battle of Guadalcanal, Bougainille, Guam and Iwo Jima. Al came home and worked for Borden Dairy and the Illinois Tollway before starting a service station business called Mansfield Mobil, and Shell in Woodstock. After selling the business he worked as Custodian for Woodstock High School and helped out the Woodstock Independent Newspaper.
He is survived by his daughters, Kay (Terry) Sunderlage and Susan Gusinde of Tomah, grandchildren; Sean (Ann) Sunderlage, Kelly Sunderlage and Katrina (Eric)Becker, great-grandchildren; Anderson Becker, Jackson Becker, Kirsten Hogan, Sarah Hogan, Hannah Hogan, Christian Sunderlage and Elizabeth Sunderlage.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Eugenia and brothers, Charles, William, Harry, George “Toad” and Robert Mansfield.
Al will be remembered for his quick wit, love of family, God and Country.
Visitation will be Thursday, July 28th from 10am until the funeral service at 12:00pm at Schneider, Leucht, Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home 1211 N. Seminary Ave Woodstock, IL 60098. Burial will be in McHenry County Memorial Park Cemetery in Woodstock.
