Michael “Mike” McCoy lost his war with cancer after six and a half years of courageous battle, on August 5, 2017, in his home surrounded by his whole family.  Fighting to the very end to beat the odds he was given in 2010, Mike was an inspiration to family and friends of perseverance and never-failing positivity.  For all the years he took chemotherapy to combat his illness, he never missed a day of work or an important event for his children.

Born March 8, 1948, To Donald I. and Carol (Germanson) McCoy in Dixon, IL, Mike attended Catholic elementary school in Dixon and Newman Central Catholic High School in Sterling, IL before serving in the United States Navy from 1966 through 1970. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War.  Mike earned an associate’s degree from DeVry Institute in Chicago, IL.

Mike was a principled man who loved his family more than anything in life.  He tried to teach his sons by his example to be strong men with gentle hearts.  Mike however did have a bit of devilment or mischief in him and those who knew him well, often spotted the twinkle in his eye as he pulled a prank or set up a joke on someone.

On November 28, 1970, he married Anne Varga at St. Patrick’s Church in Dixon.  He is survived by Anne, his wife of 46 and a half years.  Also surviving him are four sons: Jason (Maureen) of Aurora, IL;  Todd, of Rice Lake, WI; Peter (Kate) of Louisville, KY; and Dan (Lindsay) of Naperville, IL; grandchildren: Maura, Cody and Quinn of Aurora; Jackson and Henry of Louisville; and  Liam and Delaney of Naperville; siblings: Kathy Hochstein of Dixon; Tim (Monica) of Fort Myers, FL; Eileen (Bob) Vogel of Iowa City, IA; Dennis (Donna) of Dixon; and Dave (Kris) of Mineral Point, WI; and numerous nieces and nephews.  In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place.

Visitation with the family will be Thursday, August 10, from 4-8 pm at Schneider, Leucht, Merwin and Cooney Funeral Home, 1211 North Seminary Avenue, Woodstock.  Visitation will continue on Friday, August 11,  at St. Mary Church, 312 Lincoln Avenue, Woodstock, from 10 am until the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 am.  After the Mass, the cremains will be be taken to the columbarium in Calvary Cemetery, Woodstock, for inurnment.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Journeycare Hospice, 405 Lake Zurich Road, Barrington, IL 60010; St. Mary of Woodstock School Foundation, Inc., Box 233, Woodstock, IL 60098; or a charity of your choice.
