Mary Ellen Burg Obituary

Mary Ellen Burg, 84, of Woodstock, IL passed away on September 10, 2018 at her home.  She was born in Woodstock, IL on January 17, 1934 to Harold and Mary Agnes (Bolger) Evans.  She was the oldest of three children.

She graduated from St. Mary High School in 1951.  On September 7, 1953, she married Joseph C. Burg at St. Mary Church in Woodstock.  Together, they had five children.

After graduating from high school, Mary Ellen worked at the First National Bank of Woodstock until she started a family.  For many years Mary Ellen was a homemaker focused on raising her children.  She started working part time for Welcome Wagon, introducing newcomers to the city of Woodstock and its services and merchants.  Her outgoing personality and warmth made her excel in that role.   She later worked part-time at Montgomery Ward for several years.  She then returned to banking for the First National Bank of Woodstock (and its’ successor entities) and continued there for nearly 40 years. retiring at age 77.   As a bank teller, she met hundreds of customers and developed strong relationships based on her accuracy, promptness, and pleasant personality.  Always attentive to detail, she remembered faces, names and important information about her customers.  In the era of online banking, many of her customers preferred to stand and wait in line for her personal service.

Mary Ellen was a long-time member of the St. Mary Mariola Club, volunteering time for various school and church related projects.   Socially, Mary Ellen enjoyed travel planning, and organized many trips for friends and family.  She was an avid sports fan, cheering for the Cubs, Notre Dame, Green Bay Packers, and most importantly, the sporting teams of her children and grandchildren.  For many years, she and her husband Joe owned a second home near the Wisconsin Dells and enjoyed entertaining friends and family there.

She is survived by her children, Mary Jo Burg of Chicago, IL, Marcia (Jeff) Porter of Woodstock, IL, Gary (Wendy) Burg of Edwardsville, IL, Robert Burg of Woodstock, IL and Michelle (Curtis) Price of Woodstock, IL.  Grandchildren include Meagan (Andrew Ruehl) Porter, C. J. Price, Abigail Burg, Alivia Price, Kylie Burg, Madelyn Price, and Jason Burg and great grandchildren, Caden and Cambrie Ruehl.  Also surviving is sister in law, Susan Evans, and two very special cousins, Al Evans and Mary Ann Sharp.  She is also survived by forty-three nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings.  Her husband Joseph died on November 6, 2017.
