Joseph C. Burg, 84, of Woodstock, IL passed away on November 6, 2017 at Centegra Hospital McHenry, surrounded by his loving family. 

He was born in Manitowoc, WI on May 19, 1933, to Christopher and Anna (nee Ahlers) Burg, the youngest of eight children.  The family moved to Woodstock in 1945.  He attended St. Mary’s school, graduating from high school in 1951.  Upon graduation, he enlisted in the US Air Force, where he served for four years. 

On September 7, 1953, he married Mary Ellen Evans at St. Mary’s Church in Woodstock.  Together they had five children.

Joe was a carpenter, working with Freund Construction for 25 years; and finally retiring from Peet Frate Line Inc.  He was active in the St. Mary’s School Board, serving as President and was a member of the St. Mary’s Parish Council.  He was an active member of the Woodstock Council #776 Knights of Columbus, serving as Grand Knight and long - time Financial Secretary.  He was also a member of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus. 

He was a twenty-eight year member of the Woodstock Rural Fire Department, where he earned the position of Chief.   He was a past President of the McHenry County Fire Chief’s Association. 

Along with his wife, they enjoyed many memorable vacations with their friends as well as spending time at their summer home in the Wisconsin Dells. 

He is survived by his loving wife of sixty four years; his children, Mary Jo Burg of Chicago, Marcia (Jeff) Porter of Woodstock, Gary (Wendy) Burg of Portland, OR, Robert Burg of Woodstock, and Michelle (Curtis) Price of Woodstock.  Grandchildren include Meagan (Andrew Ruehl) Porter, C J Price, Abigail Burg, Alivia Price, Kylie Burg, Madelyn Price, and Jason Burg.  Great grandchildren, Caden, and Cambrie Ruehl; and a sister in law, Susan Evans. He is also survived by thirty-eight nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and seven siblings, William (Grace) Burg, Al (Audrey) Burg, John (Dorothy) Burg, Helen (Ralph Kristensen), Dorothy (George) Kohl, Ervin (Phylliis) Burg, Claire (Tennes) Gabrielson; and a brother in law, Robert Evans.

Visitation will be held on Friday, November 10, 2017 from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Schneider Leucht Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home in Woodstock.  The visitation will continue on Saturday, November 11, 2017 at St. Mary Church, 312 Lincoln Avenue, Woodstock from 10:00 am until the 11:00 am Mass of Christian Burial.  Interment will follow in Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Woodstock.

Memorials may be made to the St. Mary Guardian Angel Fund or the Marian Central Athletic Department.
