Grace Pembroke Greenwald, 90, of Woodstock, passed peacefully on Monday, July 3, 2017 at the Hearthstone Manor in Woodstock.

She was born March 7, 1927 in Urbana, IL to Grace Gunning and John Pembroke.  She married Frank Greenwald on March 31, 1951 in Gary, IN.

Grace attended Drake University in Des Moines Iowa where she was a Kappa Alpha Theta.  She earned a degree in sociology and went on to become an elementary school teacher.  Her brief professional career gave way to a career as a mother and active participant in her community.

She served in the Woodstock Hospital Auxiliary in various capacities for over forty years.

She was devoted to promoting women’s education and was a co-founder of a local chapter of P.E.O.  (Philanthropic Education Organization) in 1977.  She was active on the Fine Arts Board, Woodstock Opera House Restoration and Mental Health Board.   As a parishioner of St. Mary’s Church, she was a CCD teacher, Eucharistic Minister and member of the funeral luncheon committee.  She enjoyed many years in the Welcome Wagon and delivering Meals on Wheels.

Grace had a great appreciation for the fine arts, which began with performing in high school dramas, where she first met her future husband, Frank Greenwald.  They were long time season ticket holders at both the Goodman Theatre and Lyric Opera in Chicago.   Grace enjoyed travels to Australia, Belgium, Germany, Eastern Europe and the British Isles.  She was a life-long bridge player and also had a love of crossword puzzles.

She was preceded in death by her son, James (2010), a brother, John Pembroke (2013) and husband, Frank (2015).  Her memory is honored by children, Catherine (Stephen) Kilburn of Raleigh, North Carolina, Carolyn (Timothy) Horton of Baltimore, Maryland, F. Tobin (Susan) Greenwald of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Keith Greenwald of Arlington Heights, Illinois; grandchildren, Kelly Kilburn, Casey Kilburn, Emily Horton and Mark Horton.

A Memorial gathering will be held on Friday, July 14, 2017 at St. Mary Catholic Church 312 Lincoln Avenue, Woodstock from 9:00 am until the 11:00 am Memorial Mass.  Interment in Calvary Cemetery will be private.
